Why is ferritin important to check?

Ferritin is your body's way of storing iron. Low ferritin is one of the most common causes of fatigue in women, especially if you have heavy periods. Iron deficiency can also affect hair, skin, and your ability to get pregnant - but it's often discovered late because symptoms creep up gradually.

What's included in Maybe Baby's hormone test?

Our test measures ferritin along with up to 11 other hormones for a complete picture of your hormonal health.

Apart from a slightly scary prick, the whole Maybe Baby experience was positive! The results were clear and easy to understand. The wait felt a bit long for me due to weekends and holidays, so it was also appreciated when you informed me about the delay.

Jessica

Good instructions on how to perform the test, nice to have both a summary and more detailed information about the different parts of the results.

Molly

The most wonderful treatment and I still have great contact with you. So incredibly grateful for what you do. So happy that I got to experience the wonderful thing you've created.

Ferritin Ferritin

Think of ferritin as your body's iron warehouse - it shows how much iron you have stored in your body, ready to be used when you need it.

What does it do?

Ferritin is a protein that stores iron in your cells. When your body needs iron - for example, to form red blood cells or transport oxygen - iron is released from ferritin. The ferritin level in your blood reflects how large your iron reserves are.

Why does it matter?

Low ferritin can cause fatigue, dizziness, heart palpitations, hair loss, and difficulty concentrating. Women of reproductive age have a higher risk of low ferritin due to menstrual bleeding. Iron deficiency can also affect fertility and is important to check before pregnancy.

Reference range: Ferritin in women: 20-200 ug/L. Values below 30 ug/L may indicate depleted iron stores, even if they're technically within the reference range.
